3. New England Patriots

It feels like the craziest thing that I have ever written but it absolutely makes sense if everything plays out correctly — the New England Patriots could absolutely get Todd Gurley and make the most of him.

In fact, I think it does not even matter if Tom Brady returns. If Brady does not return, then Bill Belichick might look at his cap space, look at a potentially young quarterback or a cheaper aging vet like Philip Rivers, and realize that to maximize the most out of the situation the team needs to get a difference-maker.

Gurley is that difference-maker and we all know that Belichick would unlock the Gurley of old and he would end up being an All-Pro.

I could also see Brady returning to New England, agreeing to yet again talk a smaller contract with the caveat that the team needs to go out and get a difference-maker, like Gurley.

The reason this makes sense for the Patriots is again, the cost of Gurley in terms of capital is not going to be that much because of his contract. Heck, I would not be surprised if Belichick could convince Les Snead to trade Gurley and a late-round pick in return for Sony Michel.

The Patriots are not flowing with cash, but they do have $44 million in cap space heading into 2020. With Stephon Gillmore’s contract ending after 2021, and the potential of a rookie quarterback coming to town, the team absolutely could afford to take on Gurley’s contract.

Next. Quarterback options for the Chargers better than Brady. dark

We would all hate to see it, but if any team is going to get the most out of Todd Gurley besides the New England Patriots, it is going to be the Los Angeles Rams.
