3. Kyle Kuzma is a security blanket for Anthony Davis

Kyle Kuzma is nowhere near the player that Anthony Davis is and Kuzma will never be the elite player that Anthony Davis is. Davis is one of the seven best players in the entire world and there truly are levels to this game and there is nothing wrong with saying Kuzma won’t reach that level.

However, in terms of the Lakers’ future, Kuzma’s value as a security blanket for Anthony Davis is apparent. Davis still has not committed to signing with the Lakers long-term, and while it most likely could happen, he also could sign elsewhere, knowing that the end of the road of LeBron’s dominance is coming.

So how does Kyle Kuzma play into this? He certainly is not going to step up and replace the production that Davis is producing. If he could do that then the Lakers wouldn’t have needed to trade for Davis in the first place.

Kuzma is the last valuable young asset that the Lakers have and they need to hold onto him now in the case that Davis does walk away and the Lakers can trade Kuzma in a package for another star to play alongside LeBron.

At this point, the Lakers would be in panic mode and the only true way to get a star would be to take one on of the awful contracts throughout the league. John Wall or Kevin Love is instantly a name that comes to mind.

It would take some working out of the salaries and maybe Davis could even do a favor to the Lakers and conduct a three-team sign and trade of some sorts. Regardless, Kuzma is the last young piece that can be put in a deal like that, making him more important in the summer than he is now.
