3. Cam Newton sells tickets

Unfortunately, the main reason why the Los Angeles Chargers would trade for Cam Newton is not because of reasons one and two, it is because of reason number three: Newton would sell tickets.

More from LA Sports Hub

The Los Angeles Chargers are in a bind where they are moving into this multi-billion dollar stadium and need to sell tickets but find themselves without a dedicated fan base in the city of Los Angeles. That is why the team is tied to Tom Brady, to begin with: nothing sells tickets like Tom Brady.

Cam Newton might not sell tickets like Tom Brady but it would absolutely be close. Newton is one of the most polarizing players in the league and is popular with the youth in a way similar to Stephen Curry in the NBA. Adding Newton would absolutely sell more tickets than getting someone such as Bridgewater or drafting a quarterback.

It is unfortunate that this is probably the Chargers’ driving factor but it has been made clear in recent years that the team is more of a business venture than anything else, with the goal of making money being front and center.

The positive side of it is that the Chargers would be getting a good quarterback and as long as he is healthy I would take Cam Newton in 2020 over Tom Brady 100 times out of 100.

And hey, maybe Newton will end up being the quarterback of the future, that is certainly an option. Maybe the Chargers draft an offensive lineman in the first round and Newton becomes so popular in Los Angeles that the team has no choice but to keep him.

He certainly has a Hollywood personality and he is turning 31 this May, so the Chargers could get six years out of him.

Personally, I would rather see the team draft a quarterback and have Newton be a short-term option, but if he has that big of an impact on tickets, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Newton in powder blue beyond 2020.
