3. The Los Angeles Rams can get out of his contract after this season

Obviously, the Los Angeles Rams’ best-case scenario would be to wait until after June and try to swing a trade with a team for Brandin Cooks and get some sort of assets in return. Maybe the team will take a future pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but I highly doubt it.

More from LA Sports Hub

As previously mentioned, the market is not going to be there for Cooks, especially after every team spent on free agency and the NFL Draft. Teams that need a wide receiver are going to get a cost-controlled wide receiver in the draft. Cooks becomes an eye-sore on the checkbooks.

The Rams have an out, though, so it is not the end of the world if the team does not trade Cooks. The Rams can get out of Cooks’ contract after this season and have the same $13 million dead cap hit in 2021 that the team would have for trading him in June.

Sure, it is better to get some sort of asset, but this allows the Rams to at least keep Cooks on board for one more season knowing that he is not going to restrict the team in the long term.

Jared Goff needs all the weapons he can get, especially with Todd Gurley no longer on the roster, so it would be pointless for the Rams to trade Cooks for a future mid-round pick when he can contribute to the team’s efforts in 2020.

Then, from there, the Rams can reassess and simply take their medicine and take the dead cap hit. It is not the most intriuging thing to do, but it is probably the smartest thing to do.

And hey, things could change in a year. Perhaps Robert Woods takes a big step back and Cooks absolutely balls out, securing his place on the roster. Regardless, you won’t be hearing any Los Angeles Rams news of a Cooks trade any time soon, or perhaps ever.
