3. Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders are a team that you would probably consider rebuilding in Madden franchise mode. With Brock Bowers on offense and Maxx Crosby on defense, Las Vegas hasn’t been able to build a steady foundation as they look to return to their winning ways and it looks like they’re a team 2-3 years away from accomplishing that goal.
But then the Raiders welcomed Tom Brady as a minority owner. Then they hired 73-year-old Pete Carroll as their head coach. Neither move signals the Raiders are ready to embark on a hefty rebuild and the main goals for Carroll may be to win games and chew bubble gum.
Like the other teams on the list, it starts with the quarterback position. The Raiders went into the season leaning on Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew to win the job but the experiment had predictably bad results. O’Connell completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,612 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions while Minshew completed 66.3% of his passes for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions to lead Las Vegas to a 4-13 record.
While the Raiders would love to have a chance to take Ward or Sanders, they would need to trade up from the sixth overall pick to do it. They could also sign Darnold but that plan could go awry if the Minnesota Vikings decide to use the franchise tag.
With so many holes, it may not be wise to use draft capital for Darnold but they could use a later pick to trade for Stafford as a one-year stopgap.
This is important considering what the Raiders are trying to do. Carroll and Stafford wouldn’t be permanent solutions but they’re both former Super Bowl champions. After years of losing, Las Vegas wants to establish a winning culture and competing for a playoff spot would be the first step in that process.
Even if the Raiders stumble, they could wind up with a higher pick in a better quarterback class that includes Texas’s Arch Manning, Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava and South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers. That might make the $50 million price tag worth it to bring Stafford to Las Vegas.
