3 Rams Making it Easy for LA to Say Goodbye in 2025
By Cem Yolbulan
As we enter the final four weeks of the season, the Los Angeles Rams are continuing their chase for an NFC Wild Card spot. With an impressive win over the Bills in Week 14, the Rams are in an excellent spot to earn a postseason berth for a second straight season.
Even if the Rams make the playoffs, they are a few pieces away from being true Super Bowl contenders. They haven't been as good offensively this season as they have been in the Sean McVay era. The injuries have obviously played a big part in that, but the Rams definitely need more upgrades there. Defensively, the Rams took a step back from their already insufficient performance. They are currently a bottom-ten unit both in terms of points and yards.
In order to make the necessary upgrades, the Rams need to part ways with several pending free agents. Some of these decisions will be harder than others. There are a few Rams who made things easier for the front office with their 2024 performance. Let's take a look.
Hunter Long, TE
Once it was announced that Tyler Higbee would miss the entire 2024 campaign, it provided an excellent opportunity for other tight ends on the roster, including Hunter Long. Unfortunately, however, the tight end play for the Rams has been subpar all season. Long was supplanted by Colby Parkinson and only played in 26% of offensive snaps while being more utilized on special teams.
In his limited playing time, Long failed to make much of a difference. He has five catches for 43 yards for the season. The Rams are more committed to fifth-round pick Davis Allen in the pecking order and Higbee is going to return in 2025, making Long highly expendable.
Long has been decent as a blocker, receiving 68.1 and 64.5 PFF grades in pass and run block, respectively. He could get a look elsewhere once he hits free agency at the end of this season but it doesn't make sense for the Rams to bring him back.
