Chargers' Khalil Mack Extension Sends Clear Message About Missed DK Metcalf Trade

After failing to land WR DK Metcalf, the Los Angeles Chargers proved they're still all-in by extending star pass rusher Khalil Mack.

Los Angeles Chargers fans entered the NFL offseason with high expectations for general manager Joe Hortiz. After all, the Chargers are coming off an 11-win season with over $93.8 million to spend, per OverTheCap, putting them in a good position to be one of the more active teams this spring.

Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver D.K. Metcalf is one player Los Angeles fans wanted to see added to quarterback Justin Herbert's arsenal. Unfortunately, the Chargers missed out on acquiring the star playmaker, as Metcalf was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick on Sunday.

Although the Chargers' failure to land Metcalf is disappointing, the team's latest move is proving that GM Hortiz won't stay quiet this offseason.

Chargers Re-Sign DE Khalil Mack Before Free Agency

Sources close to NFL insider Ian Rapoport are reporting that the Chargers have re-signed veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack just under an hour before legal tampering begins. The new contract is only for one year and is worth $18 million in fully guaranteed money.

It was only last week when ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Mack was expected to have "multiple suitors" in free agency. The fact that the Chargers beat the competition by re-signing the 34-year-old pass rusher at the 11th hour not only proves their commitment to the player but also shows they're serious about competing for a Super Bowl.

Mack is coming off another strong season that saw him make his ninth Pro Bowl appearance in 11 years.

Even though they weren't his 2023 numbers, the former Buffalo Bull still racked up 20 solo tackles, 6.0 sacks, nine defended passes, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 16 starts. He also had four solo tackles and a pair of sacks in his lone playoff appearance, however, it wasn't enough to help Los Angeles stave off elimination.

Despite being in his mid-30s, Mack was one of Pro Football Focus' highest-graded exterior defenders in terms of run stoppage (87.7, 2nd), pass rushing (78.9, 16th), and overall defense (90.2, 5th).

The Chargers will need Mack to replicate that performance if they want to remain in the Super Bowl mix for at least the 2025 campaign. Now that he's re-signed, GM Hortiz can continue bolstering a Los Angeles defense that finished with the third-best PFF grade (78.5).

Speaking of a potential championship run, the Chargers currently hold the 11th-best Super Bowl 60 odds (+2900) on FanDuel Sportsbook just two days before NFL free agency officially begins.
