Chargers Refusing to Bench Veteran Bust Almost Cost Them Another Game
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Chargers won their fourth straight game on Sunday night to improve to 7-3 for the season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has worked his magic in his first year in charge, already winning two more games than the entirety of last season.
The majority of the Chargers' success has come on the defensive side of the ball. Los Angeles is still the best defensive team in the league, keeping nine out of their ten opponents under 20 points.
The offense, however, is still a work in progress. The wide receiver room was questionable to begin with and it hasn't entirely erased all question marks. Rookie Ladd McConkey has been playing well, putting up 43 catches, 615 yards, and four touchdowns through ten games. The rest of the pass-catching unit has been less convincing.
The biggest disappointment, somewhat unsurprisingly, has been Jalen Reagor. The former first-round pick who joined the Chargers mid-season has failed to make an impact in his five appearances. In Week 11, he was once again unable to contribute, receiving the lowest offense grade per PFF with 52.2.
Reagor played ten snaps on Sunday and was targeted once on a 20+ yard deep ball. To nobody's surprise, he wasn't able to reel it in.
So far this season, the former Eagles pick has six targets and four receptions for 76 yards. In Week 7 against the Cardinals, Reagor had a costly fumble at the goal line, potentially costing the Chargers the game. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman clearly trusts Reagor as a deep threat, but the Chargers may be better off demoting him.
