Lakers Dooming Bronny James With Terrible 2024-25 Season Plan
By Cem Yolbulan
There has been a ton of hand-wringing and unfair criticism about the Lakers' decision to draft Bronny James. At the end of the day, the Lakers used a late second-round draft pick on him and LeBron James playing on the same NBA team as his son will be a beautiful and historic moment.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone wanting to share the court with his son. Especially if you are arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. It is undeniable that plenty of fathers would do the same thing if given the opportunity.
The real question and point of concern here, however, is whether this is the right thing for Bronny. This is a 20-year-old rookie who suffered a serious cardiac arrest just last year. He looks nowhere near being an NBA-caliber player so far as his disastrous preseason stats demonstrate.
Bronny James Preseason Stats
3 games
36 minutes
2 points
3 rebounds
1 assist
3 blocks
5 turnovers
3 fouls
1/11 fg
0/4 3pt
+/-: -40
It has been reported earlier this week that the Lakers plan to have Bronny and LeBron share the court on opening day. This means that Bronny will be a part of the rotation, even only for a brief period.
Plus, all eyes will be on Bronny and his performance will come under serious scrutiny. LeBron critics are already rubbing their hands together to cry nepotism.
It can be argued that this is too much pressure to put on Bronny when he has so much work to do to become an NBA player. He needs developmental reps in the G League. Giving him unearned minutes from the get-go in the NBA instead, is a recipe for his inevitable struggle.
Bronny James could have been a solid starter at USC as a rising sophomore this season. Instead, he is going to be a bad NBA player as a rookie. Whether this plan works in the long run remains to be seen but it is certainly a questionable one.
