Matthew Stafford Reportedly Makes Big Rams Decision for the 2025 Season
By Cem Yolbulan
Immediately after the Los Angeles Rams' loss to the Eagles in the divisional round of the playoffs, Matthew Stafford was non-committal in his plans for the future. Even though he said "sure feels like it" to a question about whether he has more football in him, Stafford didn't reveal whether he would return for his 17th season in the NFL.
Rams head coach Sean McVay had told reporters that he wanted the situation resolved as quickly as possible.
On Wednesday, we finally got one big step closer to the resolution. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Stafford plans to return and play for another season while adding that he needs to work out a deal with the Rams.
Matthew Stafford Reportedly Returning for Another Season
The Rams and Stafford worked out an agreement to restructure the star QB's contract last offseason as well. The adjustment increased Stafford's pay for the 2024 season and included a $23.5 million guaranteed salary, a $12.5 million signing bonus, and a $4 million guaranteed roster bonus, making it essentially a one-year, $40 million deal.
As part of that deal, Stafford gave up his 2025 guarantees, so another deal needs to be agreed upon. Stafford currently carries a $49.6 million cap heading into the 2025 season. It would behoove the Rams to lower that figure through a restructuring of that deal.
Los Angeles could save up to $27 million by moving on from Stafford this offseason. While that remains a possibility, the Rams are unlikely to find a better QB than Stafford for next season. As frustrating or inconsistent the two-time Pro Bowler can be at times, he is an elite arm talent with a high upside, demonstrated by the Rams' Super Bowl win three seasons ago.
