On December 14, 2023, the Los Angeles Chargers under Brandon Staley broke the franchise record for most points allowed in a game when they lost 63-21 to the Las Vegas Raiders. This was the end of the Staley era in Los Angeles. Now things are looking up with the arrival of the new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

However, somehow, Staley is still being considered for defensive coordinator gigs around the NFL. And not just any gig. The 41-year-old just interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator opening.

Brandon Staley Interviewing With the 49ers

The 49ers fired their defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after only one year on the job. He had replaced DeMeco Ryans, who became the head coach of the Houston Texans last year. San Francisco has been one of the elite defensive teams over the past few seasons and that continued in 2023 under Wilks as well. They allowed the third-fewest points in the league.

Yet, for a team with Super Bowl aspirations, that wasn't good enough. They are looking for an upgrade in the position.

Whether Staley could be an upgrade is a big question mark. In his only season as a defensive coordinator role in the NFL, he led the Rams to the best defense in the league, both in points and yards allowed. This landed him the Chargers job.

However, he failed to replicate his defensive success with the Bolts, despite having good talent across the board. Under Staley, the Chargers' defense ranked 29th, 21st, and 24th, respectively, in points allowed.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and the decision-makers in San Francisco are expected to announce their decision later this week. We have to wait and see whether Staley ends up failing upwards.

Despite the Harbaugh hire and the talent level on the roster, FanDuel Sportsbook still considers the Chargers a long shot (+1600) to win the AFC.
