The NFL season is finally here and the Los Angeles Rams open the season next Sunday in Detroit. The teams cut down their roster to 53 players last week and are currently filling their practice squads for next season. As players who couldn't survive roster cuts find new homes, former Rams players also sign new contracts elsewhere. A member of the Rams' Super Bowl-winning team just signed a new contract with an NFC bottom feeder.

The Carolina Panthers, who finished last season 2-15, just signed QB John Wolford to the practice squad. Carolina starts talented quarterback Bryce Young and has veteran Andy Dalton as his backup. Now, they are adding the 28-year-old Wolford to the practice squad along with undrafted rookie QB Jack Plummer.

NFL News: Former Rams QB John Wolford Signs With the Panthers

Wolford played for the Rams for three seasons, starting in four games in that span, going 2-2. He most notably started in the Week 17 matchup against the Cardinals in 2020 with a playoff berth on the line. He became the first QB to throw for 200+ yards and rush for 50+ yards in his NFL debut and carried the Rams to a victory to clinch the playoffs. He went on to start in the wild-card game against the Seahawks before suffering a neck injury.

The former Wake Forest signal-caller was the primary backup to Matthew Stafford in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, winning a Super Bowl in that period. He spent last year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but failed to suit up in an NFL game. He was released earlier this week before roster cuts and will now wait for his turn in Carolina.
