Lakers Continue to Get Spurned In Their Coaching Search
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Lakers are still looking for their next head coach. Whether it is going to be JJ Redick or another candidate, the Lakers need to make a hire soon before the NBA Draft and free agency arrive in two weeks.
Dan Hurley, who was considered the frontrunner for the Lakers job, publicly turned their offer down earlier this week. This forced the Lakers to go back to the drawing board. However, it seems like Hurley is not the only candidate to show a lack of interest in the Lakers job.
The Los Angeles Times' Dan Woike reported that top candidates for the coaching staff are also not interested in joining the Lakers. James Borrego and Sam Cassell, who are not only candidates for head coach but also for top assistants in case Los Angeles hires Redick, are reportedly not willing to take that job with the Lakers.
"While the team had held Borrego in high regard and regardless of his position in the Cleveland search, league insiders believe he’s not interested in a secondary position on the Lakers’ staff. Sam Cassell, another coach whom the Lakers have spoken to in this process, will also probably not be available as it’s widely believed he’s in line for a promotion on the Celtics’ bench with Charles Lee leaving to coach in Charlotte."

If the Lakers hire Redick, they will need experienced assistant coaches to join him on his staff. A first-time head coach needs as many veterans surrounding him as possible and Borrego and Cassell are as well-respected as they come. However, the fact that they are not interested doesn't bode well for the Lakers.
The Lakers will surely continue their search for top assistants around the league. Once the most glamorous market in the league is now struggling to convince assistant coaches to join. That is something the ownership and the front office have to think about.
