Rams Should Target a Former First-Round Pick to Be a Successor to Matthew Stafford

The Los Angeles Rams could add a former first-round quarterback as a succession plan at quarterback.

The Los Angeles Rams are 1-2 heading into Week 4. They are seeking to win their second game in a row even with multiple starters on injured reserve.

Despite being 36 years old, quarterback Matthew Stafford is holding down the fort. Heading into the contest against the Chicago Bears, Stafford is sixth in the NFL in passing yards (754) with two passing touchdowns and one interception.

But the Rams know that Stafford won't be there forever. At the beginning of the season, Stafford agreed to a revised one-year deal that included a $12.5 million signing bonus and $23.5 million guaranteed.

Both sides will revisit contract talks at the end of the season but the Rams should consider acquiring a former first-round pick to be the successor for Stafford.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report released an article discussing players on the trade block entering Week 4.

In that article, he put Zach Wilson and listed the Rams as a potential suitor.

"The Rams could also consider Wilson as part of a succession plan behind Matthew Stafford. While Stafford is still playing at an elite level, he's also 36 years old. Not every quarterback wants to play well into their 40s."

While Wilson has been underwhelming thus far in his career, the Rams could be a great location for him.

Talent isn't the problem with Wilson. It was everything else that came with the position. Watching the game from the sideline behind a future Hall of Fame signal-caller could go a long way. That in combination with Sean McVay coaching Wilson up, could give them a cheap but talented player in the wings.

This past preseason with the Broncos, the BYU product went 28-of-44 for 397 yards, four passing touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

It's an intriguing option and something the Rams should consider.
