Pro Bowl WR Already Eyeing Rams Ahead of Free Agency
As the Los Angeles Rams prepare for Monday's Wild Card collision with the Minnesota Vikings, a chunk of the fanbase is already looking ahead to the NFL offseason.
Whether the Rams go all the way to the Super Bowl or not, the offseason will be here in no time. This year's free agency period opens on Friday, March 7, allowing general manager Les Snead to bolster the roster with the approximately $58.1 million in cap space he'll have left to spend — the 16th-highest amount in the league, per Spotrac.
Depending on how much money the Rams are looking to spend, a former Pro Bowl wide receiver has made it clear that he's interested in joining the franchise this winter.
NFL Free Agency: WR Keenan Allen Eyeing Rams as Potential Destination
On Jan. 3, Chicago Bears WR Keenan Allen spoke to Chicago Sun Times' Patrick Finley about his intentions when he becomes a free agent in March. Although the veteran playmaker is open to re-signing with the Bears, he revealed that he's willing to move back to Los Angeles to play for the Rams (or Chargers).
Allen, 32, is no stranger to California after spending his first 11 NFL seasons with the Chargers, who drafted him 76th overall back in 2013. The former Cal Golden Bear went on to become one of the league's best receivers during his time with the franchise before he was shockingly traded to the Bears last March.
Despite spending his 12th campaign in Chicago, Allen left his family in South Carolina for the year, suggesting that he isn't close to being finished with the Golden State.
"I have to talk it over with the wife and the kids to see what they want to do," Allen told Finley when asked about potentially moving his family from California to Illinois.
If Allen's family wants to remain in Los Angeles, the Rams could be the perfect destination for the Greensboro, NC native.
Adding Allen to a WR room that already boasts Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp would give the Rams, arguably, the most lethal receiver trio in the NFL. Considering how quarterback Matthew Stafford has one of the better arms in the league, there would be more than enough opportunities to feed all three playmakers.
According to Finley, Allen also wants his next coach to have "experience" — something that ex-Bears HC Matt Eberflus lacked. Fortunately, that won't be a case if the six-time Pro Bowl wideout joined the Rams seeing as how Sean McVay owns an all-time record of 80-52 as well as a Super Bowl ring.
The Rams have nothing to lose by pursuing Allen to help bolster their WR depth chart this offseason. He's a battle-proven pass-catcher who's racked up over 11,000 yards and 66 touchdowns in 154 career games, and there's always the possibility that he could take a team-friendly deal to return to Los Angeles.
At the end of the day, Allen-Rams rumors are worth monitoring before NFL free agency begins in less than two months.
