The Los Angeles Rams' early playoff exit was a disappointment but the narrow nature of the loss indicated that this foundation can still compete for a Super Bowl under the right circumstances.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford's situation has been the subject of much conversation given that he's 36 years old and seems to be approaching the end of his illustrious career. He was seemingly playing with an injury during the postseason despite his strong play, and Stafford could theoretically retire.

No one within the organization actually expects that to happen. That said, head coach Sean McVay's recent comments shed some light onto whether or not he expects Stafford to return for another campaign.

Sean McVay Suggests Timeline to Know Matthew Stafford's Retirement Decision

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said on Sunday that Stafford intended to take some time to make his ultimate decision, adding that McVay wants to know sooner than later. Should Stafford hang his cleats up, Los Angeles needs to act quickly to find a successor.

McVay discussed the situation with reports as well, revealing his thoughts.

"We don't want to have that go on again," McVay said regarding last year's ongoing concern about Stafford's status. "I don't think that's good for anybody. I think sooner than later, being able to get that clarity. Understanding clear, open and honest communication. I think there's a lot of love coming from our part. I think there's a lot of appreciation coming from his part as well. And I think a lot sooner than later is an ideal scenario."

Obviously, the 2025 Rams would be better off with Stafford under center. He remains one of the NFL's best quarterbacks, someone single-handedly capable of lifting an offense to Super Bowl contention. Should he retire, there isn't much to feel good about regarding Rams football.

Fortunately, McVay expects to know sooner than later whether or not Stafford will suit up again.

"I know he's playing really good football," McVay continued. "Obviously, I love him, love working with him. What he's meant to our football team has been immeasurable in a positive way."

All reports suggest Stafford should come back. Whether or not he does remains to be seen, though it's clear that McVay would prefer he does.
