His reasoning isn’t crazy, as he points to the Celtics not needing a point guard because of the surge from Isaiah Thomas. It’s gotten them to the Eastern Conference Finals after surviving Washington in the second round.
But because they don’t need a point guard, this leaves the doors wide open for the Lakers. Depending on how you look at their current situation, the Lakers need a point guard, but it could be argued that it’s more of a want.
Trusting D’Angelo Russell isn’t a bad thing, as he’s on pace to do well in his career. But sometimes it’s not about the numbers, as the patience of fans also factors into things.
Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball both have pros and cons to drafting them. Fultz is the better scorer, while Ball gives the team a facilitator at the point.
It all boils down to how the Lakers really want to run their offense. Fultz would fit in well with how Russell plays, and the Lakers wouldn’t have to trade their young core necessarily as a result.
