The Los Angeles Chargers took a huge blow to their season as reports indicate that first round draft pick Mike Williams may miss the season due to back surgery.

Fans had a lot to be excited about with Mike Williams. Now, it seems more likely than not that fans will have to wait an entire season to see Williams light up the StubHub Center. After a promising draft in which the Chargers were declared huge winners, this news throws a huge wrench into the potential surprising success of next season.

The former Clemson Tiger was hit with a herniated disk in his back after only one practice in rookie minicamp. Since the diagnosis, Williams has received two epidurals in his back. Williams reportedly showed some positive signs to the second epidural but is still not ready to begin training camp on Sunday.

With this delayed recovery, it is looking more likely that Williams will need to undergo season ending back surgery. Although the Chargers are optimistic that this is unnecessary, the health of the young wide receiver is the most important. Still, this would be a huge blow to the Chargers this season.

Bringing in Williams alongside the likes of Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman and Tyrell Williams led to big expectations from the Chargers faithful. Williams, alongside Allen if he could stay healthy, could have given quarterback Philip Rivers one of the best receiving duos in the NFL.

With a revamped offensive line this plan seemed fail-proof. Many expected the Chargers to make a surprise run to the playoffs, and although other fans may ridicule you, it made sense.

The Chargers were in nearly every single game they played last season. Despite having various stars out throughout the year, including Allen’s week one ACL tear that set him out for the entire season. However, in typical Charger fashion, the team proceeded to somehow blow most games they could have won in the fourth quarter.

More from Los Angeles Chargers

Sure, the team has only won nine games in the last two seasons combined, but they easily could have won nine games alone last season. Now, with a healthy Allen and Williams in the receiving core, with added protection for Rivers, Los Angeles seemed poised to give Rivers a few more chances to get that coveted ring.

The difference between making the Super Bowl and going 9-7 is huge and we should not get ahead of ourselves, but the Chargers were in for one of the biggest turnarounds in the NFL. Now, that turnaround may be up in the air.

Rivers still does have a good receiving core. Plus, we all know that Rivers can turn any receiver into at least a decent one. However, with question marks around Allen’s knees losing Williams is huge. He was supposed to be the plan B if Allen suffered an injury, now he is suffering an injury of his own.

Next: Predicting the Chargers record

As a Charger fan myself I understand how and why a fan may lose hope in next season already. The Chargers bad luck continues, as it never seems to stop. However, I think that we should always have faith in the magic that Philip Rivers can accomplish.
