3. San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have a fairly good set of running backs to rely on next season to help pick up the load alongside quarterback Jimmy Garopolo. However, while the 49ers’ group of guys definitely are solid, they are not elite as are the top two teams in this division and the gap between the bottom two and top two in the division is significant.

Jerick McKinnon was a standout running back for the Minnesota Vikings last season and was traded to the 49ers this offseason. McKinnon never got the full nod as the feature back but showed signs of being a potential Pro Bowl-caliber player. McKinnon rushed for 570 yards on 150 attempts last season with three rushing touchdowns.

He is also a threat in the passing game as he collected 421 receiving yards to go alongside two receiving touchdowns. As the feature back in San Francisco, McKinnon should be in good shape.

Behind McKinnon is a solid backup in Matt Breida. Breida is not a household name, however, his 465 rushing yards in 105 attempts was very promising.

McKinnon and Breida are going to take up the bulk of the snaps at running back with third-string option Joseph Williams also providing a solid sense of security down the depth chart.
