3. C Austin Romine

Sorry, you are not going to see another big-name splash on this list as there are no other big splashes that really make sense for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Instead, here is someone in Austin Romine who is right up the Dodgers’ alley in the kind of players that they bring in.

There is a very good chance that the Dodgers are looking to add at the catcher position this year. Russell Martin is a free agent, and while he is a great veteran presence on this team, it would not be all that surprising to see the Dodgers want to look elsewhere.

Martin did have a huge showing in Game 3 of the NLCS but he really only stuck around because of his presence and his connection with Hyun-Jin Ryu. Aside from that, he did not give the Dodgers much offensively.

Austin Barnes is an option to be a backup catcher but we all saw how that went in 2019. Barnes just isn’t the player he was in 2017. And while he deserves a chance to make the roster, the Dodgers should still look to add externally.

Keibert Ruiz just isn’t ready and there are no other real options in the farm to help provide big-league depth. That is why someone like Austin Romine is perfect.

He is not going to be pricey whatsoever and he gives the Los Angeles Dodgers the perfect catcher that they are looking for. He is more than capable behind the plate and has a history of catching some of the best arms in the league.

He has playoff experience being a member of the Yankees his entire career and again has Southern California roots.

Most importantly, he ranked 10th among catchers in batting average against left-handed pitching last season (with at least 50 plate appearances). Romine hit .309 against southpaws.

That is obviously important because of the Dodgers’ left-handed heavy lineup. And while Will Smith is right-handed, having someone that hits lefties fairly well would be great for the team.
