2. Kelvin Herrera

Another reliever—boring, I know. Relievers are not players that fans get all that excited about and I really wanted there to be some juicy player that the Dodgers could get in return. But in being realistic while also being practical, it became clear that the two relievers were the only options.

A deal for Kelvin Herrera would be much different than a trade for Colome, though. Herrera does not have as much value at Colome and thus there would likely be some sort of prospect mix thrown in the trade. I would not be surprised if the Dodgers requested a few prospects that they like and also sent Kenta Maeda in the trade.

This is the exact situation we saw last season. The team traded one year of an outfielder (Yasiel Puig) and a pitcher that they did not need (Alex Wood), alongside Matt Kemp and Kyle Farmer, to save some money and got two prospects in return in Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray.

And in case you are wondering, both Gray and Downs thrived in their first year with the Dodgers organization and are now in MLB Pipeline‘s Top 100.

Herrera would provide what that trade didn’t and that is someone who will actually help the big-league roster but the rest of the logic is sound. The Dodgers won’t get any elite prospects but can target some upper-30 guys, similar to Downs and Gray.

Herrera is a good pitcher, although his 2019 numbers would not indicate that. Prior to his 6.14 ERA last season, Herrera had a career ERA of 2.82 and has experience pitching in the biggest moments in the World Series with the Kansas City Royals.

He could easily go back to his old form with the Los Angeles Dodgers, as we often see pitchers do, and could even surprise the White Sox and be a better pitcher than Colome. He is less reliable but has a higher ceiling.
