Is Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan Worth A Max Deal?
By Pablo Jacobo
Los Angeles Clippers’ super star Blake Griffin went down 9 games ago after he underwent surgery for a staph infection. The Clippers have gone 6-3 after Sunday’s victory over the Chicago Bulls. Chris Paul has been magnificent throughout the run but another player has stepped up big for Los Angeles.
DeAndre Jordan has been phenomenal in Griffin’s absence. He has been an absolute beast in the paint on both ends of the court. In the last 8 games, Jordan has averaged 17 points and 20 rebounds while shooting an absurd 71-percent from the floor.

Jordan has been a problem for the opposition as his relentless rebounding prowess on the offensive glass has led to points. His constant movement throughout the court has created easy buckets for him as well as his teammates. For the season he’s scoring only 11 points a game.
The Clippers have a conundrum on their hands, as Jordan will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer. How much money will it take to keep him away from other teams? Given what we have seen transpire without Griffin on the floor, Jordan means a lot for Los Angeles.

Jordan has grabbed double-digit boards in 4 out of last 8 games. His scoring numbers have gone up. Keep in mind; his post game is still not fully developed. DJ is rapidly coming into his own as a big man. He’s still just 26-years-old and will command a max deal.
The Clippers lack depth on their bench and paying Jordan could limit their spending to reinforce the roster. Then again, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is worth 18 billion. The salary cap is set to increase significantly in the summer, which could benefit Los Angeles.
Could Jordan’s great play be an aberration? Could he sustain this form when Griffin returns to the lineup? If he continues his fine play and the Clippers hesitate to pay him, I know a team across the hall that will have enough cash to spend and are in need of a big man.
Jordan is a viable defensive player of the year candidate this season.
Jordan is viable defensive player of the year candidate this season. He’s blocking two shots a game. He led the NBA in rebounding last season; he currently leads the league with 14 a game. He played in his 300th consecutive game on Sunday, which shows his durability. He will be in high demand this offseason.
The 6-year pro has slowly been improving his game and he may have found his niche. He controls the paint, sets screens, moves all over the floor and is a tremendous rebounder. The Clippers would be wise to extend DJ before he hits the open market.
