Don’t Be Fooled, NFL To LA Update
In the past few months we have seen a vast number of reports regarding the possible NFL return to Los Angeles. As exciting as the thought may be, there is a mind numbing amount of contradictory reports on the subject. Seriously every other week I read about how “The Chargers are now the favorite to make the move here first, oh but actually now it’s the Rams, what about the Raiders?” I mean at some point some of you (myself included) must wonder if this whole thing is just made up and not true at all. The truth, as is often the case, is complicated.

So allow me if you will, to attempt to clear things up here, and possibly restore your faith in the NFL’s return to our beloved city (or at least a city near you). As far as any one team being “in the lead” on returning to LA that’s a complicated discussion. There’s really two major hurdles for any franchise to move here.
One major hurdle is obviously the stadium. That in and of itself is a complex proposition as a franchise will have to find a temporary home as-well as build a stadium. The other hurdle which goes hand in hand with the first is Article 4.3 of the NFL Constitution and Bylaws. Article 4.3 states “No member club shall have the right to transfer its franchise or playing site to a different city, without prior approval by the affirmative vote of three-fourths of the existing member clubs of the League.” This is where we get the conflicting opinions of which team is closer to coming back.

As far as the first hurdle goes I, along with others on our staff here, believe the Rams have an edge on building a stadium here. If you want to know specifically why please check out some of our previous articles on the subject. The Chargers on the other hand seem to have an edge in securing a three-fourths vote from the League. According to Jason La Canfora’s article, Carmen Policy has been a key offseason pickup for the Chargers. He is well liked and highly respected by execs and in front offices across the League. He is currently spearheading efforts on behalf of both the Chargers and Raiders to build the Carson Stadium.
So we could reach the seemingly boring conclusion that there really isn’t a team “In the Lead” to come here. Certainly this won’t stop anybody from speculating however. If I were a betting man my money is still on the Rams as the owner Stan Kroenke has already checked off many of the tougher aspects of getting a stadium built. And though he may not have Carmen Policy in his corner he certainly isn’t on bad terms with other owners as far as we know. He has also not made any effort thus far to discuss staying in St Louis with any of the cities officials. Regardless of any speculation on my part, Hopefully we’ve cleared up some of the confusion in the ever complicated Saga of the NFL’s return to Los Angeles.
