2017 NFL Draft: Rams’ Best Draft Options in the Second Round
By Jason Reed
Curtis Samuel – Running Back/Wide Receiver, Ohio State
The most popular consensus is that the Rams will turn to their defense and draft a cornerback in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. However, being the Rams and all, the team may shock us all and turn to another area of need. After releasing Kenny Britt the Rams do not have many viable options on the tail end of Jared Goff’s passes; potentially prompting them to select a receiver in the second.

Tavon Austin is a good, not great receiver who has failed to yet reach his potential. While he is still young, Austin is not a dominant receiver and matched up against guys like Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson is only hurting his numbers. Sure, the team added Robert Woods, but as that helps from a depth stand point it does not add much talent.
Curtis Samuel may be a fit for the Los Angeles Rams, and while he will not be that number one receiver the team needs, he will bring an interesting dynamic to Los Angeles. Much like a Percy Harvin or Ty Montgomery, Samuel has the ability to play both receiver and running back.
With his blistering speed we may see Samuel develop into a great slot receiver, receiving back, and special teams returner all in one.
The problem with Samuel is he is good at many things, but he truly fails to be great in one particular thing. NFL team’s don’t line up with the same flexibility as colleges, so he may cause team’s to shy away without the ability to stick to one master craft.

However, in an already unorthodox Rams team with a brand new head coach we may see the organization think outside the box and select a player like Samuel. Adding depth in multiple faucets of the game, Samuel may be a shocker of a pick for the Rams in the 2017 NFL Draft.
