Lakers Rumors: Never say never to Carmelo Anthony in purple and gold
By Jason Reed
The Lakers rumors of the last few months have all been regarding the team’s desperate need for a superstar. One star that has not been mentioned much is Carmelo Anthony, yet still, we should never say never.
We have heard it all before. LeBron James, Paul George, Klay Thompson – a plethora of big names in the NBA have all been tied somehow to Lakers rumors. Granted, this makes sense, in such a big market as LA you are going to need a star. With this being Kobe Bryant’s first year out of the league, it is a natural inclination to want to bring in someone to try to fill those shoes.
Some think that superstar potential lies within second overall selection Lonzo Ball. Ball is already the biggest name coming out of the draft and has incredible marketability. If he can play half as good as his father says he can then he will be a huge success in the NBA; even with those $500 dollar sneakers.
However, Ball is not a superstar, at least not yet. He is polarizing, yes, but that does not make him a superstar. Tim Tebow is one of the most polarizing names in sports and he is not a superstar in football or baseball.
One name that does hold that superstar appeal is Carmelo Anthony. Anthony has been one of the biggest stars in the league for quite some time now. While his on court performance has dwindled in recent years, he is still widely regarded as one of the biggest stars in the NBA.
Now, with Melo, you either love him or you hate him. The common argument against the All-Star forward is that he is not a winner – that he simply cares about his own good and his paycheck. Playing in such mediocrity in New York will do that to you, but that is no testament to Anthony’s character.
At the end of the day, we are all fans. Whether you write articles or you sit in front of a camera at ESPN, we are fans, we have no right to question Anthony’s morale and true motives.
Once you can get over that hump the idea of Anthony on the Lakers does not sound too bad. With age catching up him and his athleticism not being what it once was, the move to power forward would be huge. Anthony could be the perfect stretch four, we know he can rebound and he would be one of the best shooting and ball handling fours in the league.

Not to mention the Lakers can easily afford Anthony. There are bitter ties to be cut in New York, we all know that, so the asking price for Anthony may be at an all-time low. If Los Angeles can send Luol Deng, Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson and a future draft pick I would consider that a huge win.
Granted, Anthony has not been a recent topic of discussion in the latest Lakers rumors, so this may not be that probable. However, Anthony would be huge for the Lakers in every way possible.
The Buss family now gets somebody that they can market with, and market with big time. Luke Walton gets a veteran guard with some good production left in him, evident by his 22.4 points per game last season. Last but not least, Carmelo Anthony gets out of New York – it’s a win-win.

Therefore, as fans, we should never say never to the idea of Carmelo Anthony heading to the Los Angeles Lakers. If the latest Lakers rumors mean anything, the team desperately wants a superstar.
