Los Angeles Rams: Four crucial story lines to watch for next season
By Jason Reed
Wade Phillips’ impact on defense
Wade Phillips is one of the best defensive minds the NFL has to offer. Luckily for the Los Angeles Rams, Phillips is heading to Los Angeles after a four-year tenure in Denver. The 2015 Assistant Coach of the Year and Super Bowl 50 champ has seen his fair share of things in the NFL, and for such a young team with a young coach, this experience is huge.

The 70-year-old defensive coordinator made his coaching debut all the way back in 1969 with the University of Houston at just 22 years old. Eight years later in 1976, Phillips made his NFL coaching debut as the defensive line coach for the Houston Oilers; who are now the Tennessee Titans. Phillips has been coaching in the NFL ten years longer than head coach McVay has been alive.
In his 40 years of NFL experience, Phillips has coached for nine different teams and has been exclusively a head coach or defensive coordinator since 1981. This resume includes coaching with some of the biggest names in football.
Phillips has coached alongside Gary Kubiak, Dan Reeves and Marty Schottenheimer. Phillips has seen it all in the NFL and has coached some of the best defenses that we have ever seen. While it is unjust to expect that from the Los Angeles Rams, it is not unjust to expect some sort of impact from Phillips’ system.
Whether that impact will be big or small is yet to be seen. However, if Phillips can make this defense as good as it can be, the Rams will be poised for a great season.
