Sammy Watkins’ Impact in LA

The Los Angeles Rams made the biggest move of the off-season when they traded for superstar receiver, Sammy Watkins, from the Bills. Costing them E.J. Gaines and next year’s second round pick, the Rams took advantage of the Bills’ apparent attempt to rebuild and got themselves a true wide receiver 1.

With a pass-catcher of Watkins’ caliber, the receiving group in Los Angeles looks like it could be far more threatening than it was a season ago. This leaves a lot of pressure on Watkins, however, not only to perform well, but to stay healthy.

Watkins has shown his talent when he has been on the field as he was the first wide receiver drafted in a historic 2014 class that included amazing receivers, such as Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham Jr. and Mike Evans. The talent and athleticism he has put on display since his rookie year has been astounding.

More from Los Angeles Rams

After a breakout first year, Watkins was able to receive for a total of 1,047 yards for 9 touchdowns in only 13 games the next season. He, unfortunately, has only played in 37 games over the past 3 years which could be the biggest problem for both Watkins and the Rams.

Watkins also has yet to show this ability in Los Angeles– so far only accumulating 8 yards on two receptions in two games. While this can be attributed to Watkins simply learning a new offense and building chemistry with Goff, it is something to watch this Thursday to see if he becomes more involved.

Considering that Watkins’ contract is up after this season, he needs a good, healthy season to get paid what he deserves. This also means that the Los Angeles Rams need to show Watkins why they are worth him re-signing with their team this coming off-season to avoid using the franchise tag.

With so much at stake on both sides, Watkins is expected to be the centerpiece of the offense in the 2015 season but we have yet to see it. Hopefully, his role will be more apparent in the game against the Packers this Thursday.
