Chris Paul: The MVP Case Most Trampelled

facebooktwitterreddit

Don’t get me wrong now, I am very aware of how absurdly well the triple-double machine Russell Westbrook is playing.  James Harden and Stephen Curry are right up there with him and the King still holds court in the NBA.

But while much talk has been about the big four in the MVP race this year, the floor general of the Clippers has gone shockingly under the radar.  After tonight’s one-sided demolition of the New York Knicks, it has been made all the clearer that the Clips have kept themselves in the title hunt due to a huge effort by the All-Star point guard.

The biggest thing that people need to take into account is the fact that the Clippers have not dipped much in the playoff standings despite having lost players such as Blake Griffin, Jamal Crawford, and Jordan Hamilton to respective injuries

Just as surprising as his team’s success, is his own personal success.  Chris Paul is once again the leader in assists and in his most recent matchup with Westbrook he outscored the dynamic guard from OKC 33 to 24.  We’ve spoken here at LASportsHub already about how he remains one of the most dynamic point-guards in the deep pool of talent that the position has in today’s NBA.

  • In some ways he is perhaps a victim of his own success.  Westbrook has the intrigue of possibly being a back-to-back MVP with Kevin Durant.  The entire league knows the three-pointer is coming from Stephen Curry and he is still unstoppable.  James Harden has kept his team looking like a title contender seemingly single-handedly all season.

LeBron James remains the greatest threat to the Western Conference’s title chances until another team proves otherwise.

Have we simply gotten so used seeing Chris Paul as the guy with the twin who is an insurance agent? (Okay, maybe not that far.)

The fact remains that Chris Paul has all the makings of the league’s best player, both material and otherwise.  He is the star of the most played commercial during NBA broadcasts.  He has his own signature shoe with the iconic Jordan brand.

He is an All-Star who is successful in playing in one of the largest sports markets in the world.  He is efficient, intelligent, and dynamic on both sides of the floor.  If he is all of these things, then why not also the league’s best player?
